Leading a Missions Trip to Nicaragua

Dear Friends and Family,
We are so grateful that God has answered many prayers for a smooth transition off the mission field in Nicaragua and to Littleton, Colorado since our move last July.  Luke has thoroughly been enjoying his studies at Denver Seminary and has almost completed his 2nd semester.  He’s pursuing his MDiv in Youth and Family Studies.  Ellen has thrived in her role as mom, Spanish teacher, and worship intern at our church.  She’s also been writing a second book (about our re-entry experience). David (5½), Emily (4), and Lucy (2½) have done amazingly well at adjusting to their new home.  They are each thrilled at the arrival of their new baby sister, Elizabeth Kate, born on March 30th!  We are all doing well and enjoying our family of six!
We are thankful for God’s provision of new friends and especially for the privilege of investing in the young adult ministry at our church, South Fellowship Church.  Since August both of us have served as interns with this ministry and have absolutely loved being part of discipling and developing young adults.
Nicaragua is still very missed and we treasure our memories of living and serving there.  That is why we are so very excited about leading a missions trip to Nicaragua August 5th-13th with a group from our young adult ministry.  We are passionate about seeing young people get involved in what God is doing around the world.  We’re excited about this incredible opportunity to further the discipleship of our young people and be able to instill in them a sensitivity toward missions, as we grow closer to God, by seeing His heart for Nicaragua and the world.
Our team will be serving alongside our former mission organization, Missionary Ventures International and we’ll be hosted by long-time friends and coworkers, Eric and Marilyn Loftsgard. Our vision for the trip is to encourage the Loftsgards and other missionaries while also serving at a school for children with disabilities called Tesoros de Dios (God’s Treasures).  You can learn more on their website: www.tesorosdedios.org
We are planning on taking our kids with us and being in Nicaragua about a week ahead of the team to be able to visit beloved people and places.  We know that revisiting one’s host country is a very healthy and important aspect of making the transition to a new home.  To be able to do this trip as a family the cost seems overwhelming.  But we are trusting that God will provide and that He cares about the emotional health of our family.  
Would you consider partnering with us?  Our trip cost is divided in two parts.  The first is the cost of ground expenses in Nicaragua such as lodging, food, and transportation which is a total of $1,700.  The second cost and greater need for our family is airfare which is approximately $4,000.  In order to purchase our flights separate from our missions team we will need to receive the money personally.  If you would like to contribute financially to our missions trip, please follow the steps at the bottom of this letter to give through Missionary Ventures or directly to us.

Debriefing and Renewal

Luke and I had the opportunity to attend a DAR (Debriefing and Renewal) seminar the last week of July.  It was held at Mission Training International in Palmer Lake, Colorado.  This program was for any missionaries who had spent time on the mission field and were coming back to the US for a time. Topics included: stress, burn-out, soul care, healthy goodbyes and hellos, etc. We took this week as a wonderful gift from God.  We were very thankful that an anonymous donation came in to pay for more than half the cost of the conference!  And an added blessing was that our kids could spend the week with their Grammie and GrandDad, leaving us with kid-free meal times and evenings - a great chance to hang out with others or process what we'd been learning each day.   Though the program is pricey, we found it very helpful and would highly recommend it to any missionary who has spent any amount of time on the mission field.  It is so well worth it.  He...

The best things in life

In preparation for taking communion last Sunday, one of the elders of our church posed this question: "Are the best things in life earned or received ?" Immediately I thought of the best things in my life: my husband, my kids, God's overwhelming love, and Christ's salvation. And then I thought: There is no way I earned (or deserve) my husband's love.  He loves me for who I am, flaws and all.  He loves me no matter what kind of day I've had, the way I have treated him, or if I have failed in some area. And then my kids.  They are pure gifts!  Yes, they are definitely received....received with much gratitude, awe, and trepidation at the weight of the responsibility to raise them. A Small Detail

One of the tiniest things I brought with me when we moved back to Nicaragua in June was this little nut.   If you have done any kind of move overseas (and especially with kids!) you know that little things like this rarely get packed.  Especially as you wade through all of your "decision-requiring stuff": clothes, shoes, books, DVD's, papers, kitchen stuff, that random broken thing, that paper clip or magnet, that thing you forgot you had and maybe you would use it now that you found it, and on and on. It takes months of sorting, selling, giving away, packing, etc to finally be prepared with those bags that are only supposed to be 40 lbs.  Granted, this nut weighs nothing but how did it make the cut?  Better yet, how did I not lose track of it in an international move?        I'm not exactly sure how to answer the above questions but this I do know: though little in size, this nut reminds ...
