How's our transition going?

Image
Photo Credit: Katy Lute - www.katyroselutephotography.pixieset.com Our transition has gone very smoothly and we’re thankful for your prayers.  We’re often asked, “Have you experienced a lot of culture shock?”  Honestly, not really.  Yes, we’ve experienced some reverse culture shock but not in an overwhelming way.  Our recent furlough year in Indiana definitely prepared us for a move to the states.  We also believe that the effort we put into “leaving Nicaragua well” has made our transition be smoother than it might have been.   What do we miss about Nicaragua? People. We miss people.  We miss our long time friends who we’ve done life with for many years.  We miss the people we worked with and who worked in our home, providing more than labor but also true friendship.  We miss our school and the rhythms of activities that we now are reminded of through Facebook.  A few months ago Nicaragua celebrated Independence Day and...

Dear Nicaragua

*When we moved away from Nicaragua this summer our intention was to leave well.  One way I did this was by writing a letter to the beloved people in my life, saying goodbye while thanking them for ways they had blessed my life.  I decided also, as a way to process my grief, to write a letter to Nicaragua.  Today is almost 4 months from when we left Nicaragua and I've been missing it a lot more lately.  Rereading and posting this letter is part of me processing my grief of leaving our home and transitioning into a new one. June 21, 2016 Dear Nicaragua, It's hard to believe that in just four days we will be saying goodbye to you.  And I don't know when we're coming back, whether for a visit or to live again. I remember when I came for the first time so many years ago and I didn't know a soul.  I was young, excited, naive, and yet I thought I knew what you were like since I had grown up in Bolivia and assumed things were very similar, if not the same h...

24 hours left in Nicaragua

Image
In 24 hours we will be on an airplane headed to a different world.  We’ll say goodbye to Nicaragua, our home of twelve years, and in a few weeks say hello to a new one in Littleton, Colorado. In case you hadn’t heard, our family is moving to Colorado where Luke will be studying at Denver Seminary.  He will begin a three year program to earn an Master of Divinity in Youth and Family Ministries and hopes to use his degree in some sort of pastoral capacity in the future (whether youth, associate, missions or other). These past twelve school years hold a lot of memories of the many students who are near to our hearts. Here's a video of just a few of them showing love and appreciation to Luke  for the ways he invested into their lives: Goodbye Mr. Rose -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1uA7Q4vdbU We would love your prayers for: Safety in travel (we’re flying to Indiana and then driving to Colorado) Smooth and healthy transition for us all Pr...

A Look Back at Some NCA Memories By: Luke

Image
August 2004 – First Day of School Not only was it my first day teaching at NCA, but it was the first time that NCA shortened classes to allow the second part of the day to be filled with a special chapel, free lunch and team building activities. This was the first day that we played the now famous Tape Game. March 2005 – Egon’s Coke The funniest memory of teaching came from Franz’s older brother, Egon. He walked into my Bible class and I noticed that the front center of his shirt was all wet, so I asked him what happened. He replied, “Mister. I was drinking my coke (with his right hand) and then Kevin asked me what time it was.” As he was saying this he demonstrated with his right hand holding a open coke bottle and turning his wrist towards himself to check his watch, which caused him to dump his coke on himself. 2005 – 2006 – No Power, No Generators Before NCA invested into buying generators, when the power went out, it was out. This school year had the worst power outa...

Life Lately

It's been a while since our last update.  Since February 18th to be exact.  That's when we announced that our family will be moving this summer to Colorado where Luke will be attending Denver Seminary.  If you didn't catch that update check it out here: February 2016 Update Here's what we've been up to and an explanation as to why I haven't been blogging.   February 22 - Emily turned THREE! March 20 -23 - We attended the Missionary Ventures Latin American Conference in Matagalpa, Nicaragua.  We enjoyed cooler temps, fellowship, and great teaching. March 27 - We hosted an Easter Sunrise Service at our home.  It was a special morning of singing praise, reading scripture, and prayer. April 3 - David and Emily participated in a children-led worship time at our church.  The songs were by SEEDS Family Worship. April 8-10 - Luke took 33 students along with 8 other adults on the Middle School Retreat to Ometep...

February 2016 Update: Things We Love

Image
Since it is the “month of love” we thought we’d share some of the things our family has been loving lately… David loves...to build!  At four and a half he’ll use anything and everything to create what his mind has imagined.  He’s really into making things with construction paper right now ( maybe he thinks he can construct anything with it because it’s “construction” paper ).  He also loves doing puzzles and is quite good at them.   David loves his preschool and has been using more and more Spanish words and phrases he’s been learning. Emily loves...to be productive.   Our almost three year old takes initiative to help out with unloading groceries (even when they are too heavy for her), feeding the dog, washing the dishes, and doing whatever needs to get done.  Emily absolutely loves to dance.  And when she does so, she is beaming with joy!  She just started going to David’s preschool last month and is really thriving there. ...
